![]() Gary Marshall Donates Items to Celebrate Boy Scouts' Centennial By Gary Marshall The Boy Scouts of America celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding throughout the year 2010. A British military hero, Robert Baden-Powell, founded the worldwide scouting movement in 1907; in 1910 the concept was brought to America by Chicago publisher, William Boyce. Under the capable leadership of early founders such as James West, Daniel Carter Beard, and others the organization for boys was firmly established and has now engaged several million boys and adult leaders across America. The early history of scouting in Carroll County is clouded in the mists of times past. The Historical Society has some glimpses which it is featuring in a display at its museum in the historic Hillsville Courthouse. The scout display, part of the cultural heritage section in the museum, opens in February. It is being constructed at present and display items are still being sought from active and former scouts and scouters of the area. Shelby Inscore Puckett and Gary Marshall are working on this temporary exhibit and can be reached at the museum. Some distinct artifacts to be shown include a hand-written letter from Baden-Powell dated 1926; a neckerchief collection from all the National Jamborees including the 1935 "ghost" jamboree; rare scout books as early as 1914 featuring illustrations from the young Norman Rockwell; mementos of the 1937 jamboree in Washington, DC attended by scout A. Paul Breuninger who now has three generations of descendants here in Carroll County. The exhibit will illustrate the history of scouting in America, with a special interest of that history recorded in Carroll County, and it will briefly document the influence of pioneer hero, Daniel Boone, upon the scout program and organization in America. The Historical Society will host a presentation and reception about the Boy Scout Centennial on Sunday, January 31st, at 2:00 pm in the historic courtroom. A tour of the new exhibit will follow. Scout troops are especially invited; and the general public is cordially welcomed. Below are just a few of the items on display. ![]() ![]() ![]()
